There had been fears that the imposing forward could miss the first half of the new Premier League season due to the severity of the injury.
However, he has not required a major knee operation and Black Cats boss Roy Keane expects to have Jones back in his plans in early October.

"He had his operation yesterday," said Keane.
"Fortunately, we've avoided major surgery and expect him back in training in the next six-to-eight weeks.
"You never know the full story until you go into the knee, that's why we've been open in terms of the prognosis.
"But it's great news for everyone at the club - Kenwyne is a big player for us."
