Van Nistelrooy claims Ronaldo rumours are harming Real's focus

Ruud van Nistelrooy has said Real Madrid's preparations for the new season have been hampered by constant speculation over the future of Cristiano Ronaldo. "It got a bit too far maybe, it is such an issue at the moment in Spain. It gets a bit over the top," Van Nistelrooy said yesterday. "A couple of our players, they made the comment that there was only talk about him and not about the current team and stars, and everybody's waiting for the next rumour without anything concrete."
Asked whether he expected Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford, the Dutchman, who moved from United to Real, added: "I think so, if you hear the statements from United. It doesn't really sound like they'll let him go."
Meanwhile, Ryan Giggs is relieved he will no longer have to put up with questions about Manchester United's appearance record. He swept past Sir Bobby Charlton's previous best in the Luzhniki Stadium last May, notching up his 759th appearance as United overcame Chelsea in the Champions League final.
"People kept asking me about the appearance record when I was trying to win the Premier League and Champions League, so it is a relief not to have it there any more," Giggs told Inside United.
"Of course I am proud to have done it but now I just want to move on, hopefully add a few more games to the total and focus on the team."
The former Wales captain feels it is harder to make a mark than it has ever been. "There is a stigma of celebrity and money alongside football these days, which is different from when I first came into the team," he said.
Unlike many of his team-mates, who did not even attempt to get to bed, the Cardiff-born star retired to his room after that Champions League win.
"It wasn't too bad," Giggs said. "But I am getting old now."
Paul Ince was once a very close friend to the veteran winger and he will be in the opposite dug-out when United tackle Blackburn at Ewood Park in October.
"I am sure Paul will do well because he knows his stuff. He has done things a different way to my other team-mates. He started right at the bottom and did brilliantly at Macclesfield and MK Dons."
"He has proven himself, now he just has to do it in the Premier League." PA
